Biography

Elizabeth Jane/Kahuga (Eliza, Lizza Jane) was born about 1807 in the Cherokee Nation (East). She was the daughter of Shoeboots, a Cherokee man, and an enslaved woman named Doll. Elizabeth was 17 years of age in 1824 according to Shoe Boot's petition to free his three children. [1] She was granted Cherokee citizenship by the Council's decision on 18 November 1824 of Shoeboot's petition.. In spite of this in 1830 Elizabeth was enslaved by a Georgia white man "Wofford". [2] Wofford sold Elizabeth and eventually she became the property of George Lavender. Lavender was probably the father of her first child. George Thompson then secured Elizabeth and her daughter's freedom from Lavender by February of 1837 for an amount of 2,000.00. [3] Elizabeth returned to the Cherokee Nation a free woman and inherited her father's (Shoeboot's) home and farm on the Etowah River in 1836. [4] By 1836 Elizabeth was married to a Cherokee man named Ohkilunakah or Ferguson. They were the parents of one child. [5] Lizzie and her sister Polly were Removed to Indian Territory and settled next to each other in the Delaware District. By 1846 Lizzie was married to a man named Morton. [6] In 1847 two of Lizzie's daughters were captured by marauders and taken East to be sold into slavery. The Cherokee Advocate reported both their capture and their rescue. [7] In 1849 Lizzie's mother was finally freed by the Ridge family and she came to live with her daughter. The 1851 Drennan Roll of emigrant Cherokee lists Elizabeth (as Lizzy Boot) with children Ail-se, Sally, Lotty, Morrison, Dahsegahyahge . [8] Elizabeth was alive in 1860, but her death date seems to be unknown.
