Biography

1648 - John was baptised in 1648 in Tring, Herfordshire, England.[1]

1654 - when he was most likely 6 years old his father died.[2] His father's will provides evidence of John Shortt and his siblings and that his mother was Sarah.[3]

1656 -Sarah his mother remarried in 1656 to William Kentish[4] and it seems likely that her land allotment in Ireland as a part of the Adventurer's scheme then passed to her son, John Shortt jnr.

"Sarah Kentish alias Short, relict of John Short and John Short her son - part of Killustie with a castle thereon 245 acres prof. 306 unprof. In Clare 32 acres; barony Middlethird, county Tipperary Total 449 acres 32 perches statute Total rent L4-4-4 half pounds. 7/121666."[5]

1665 - John Short with one hearth in 1665 and two hearths in 1667.[6]

1666 - Sarah Kentish alias Short, relicit of John Short and John Short her son, part of Killustie with a castle thereon, 245 acres.[7]

1677 - John Short (son of Sarah Kentish) in Gortagarry N.E. thereof 113 acres, 2 roods, and 27 perches in Drumeene, 17 acres in total, Upper Ormond, Tipperary.[8]

1677 - This Deed refers to the original land grant from King Charles II to John Shortt in 1677 of Gortagarry. It also mentions a land grant to James Stopford in 1671 and Richard Penn in 1677. It refers  to a 9 June 1739 deed which was made in consideration of the marriage of John Short to Frances Shortt and John Shortt agreed with Charles Spunner to settle lands of Gortagarry for his life and his children or heirs. [9]

This John Shortt is most likely the first migrant in Ireland of this lineage. Evidence shows that he was in Gortagarry in 1665 -67. This land described as Gortagarry, Drumeene and Curraheen is near Toomevara, Tipperary. Further information on the Gortagarry Townland through the centuries can be found at http://www.forthosewhoteach.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Gortagarry-Townland-through-the-Centuries.pdf. [10]

It seems this John Shortt of Gortagarry was most likely an ancestor of John Shortt. A Y DNA test confirms that John Shortt of Tipperary is connected to the lineage of this John Shortt.

  • Fact: Deed refers to grant of Gortegary, Tipperary, Ireland in 1677 (1677) Registry of Deeds,1825 Deed 804 371 542706 – FHL 467,297 Gortegary, Tipperary, Ireland

There are "Y" DNA matches between two individuals that tested from the USA who are descendants of William Short and three descendants from Ireland who are descendants of John Shortt. [11] Further testing of male Short family of Lineage VII would be most beneficial.

Note

There is some evidence regarding an Ensign John Shortt who does not seem to be the same individual. Perhaps he was a cousin? He was of Killidillige.[12]
