John Shrewsbury was born about 1842 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.[1] He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.
During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company I of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the second[2] regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 21 years old, married and working as a boatman when he enlisted on 28 April 1863 from Cincinnati, Ohio. He was wounded in action on 18 July 1863 at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner, and discharged 25 February 1864 from Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island.[3]
