Biography
Winifred Mary Sims was born in Cooma, New South Wales on 21st November, 1890. She was the fourth child of Joseph Sims, a farmer, and Honora (nee Brosnan). Mrs H. Scott was a witness to Winifred's birth, according to her birth certificate.
When Winifred was about 2 years of age, her mother, Honora suffered a breakdown and was institutionalised. According to family stories, Honora was taken in by the extended family.
At some point in time, Winifred came to Sydney and met Arthur Markham. Between the years 1912 to 1915, they had three children together; Leslie, Thelma and Harold. Harold died before reaching his first birthday. Winifred and Arthur never married, Arthur already having a wife alive and living in Tasmania at that time. The relationship with Arthur did not last beyond the birth of Harold.
In August of 1916, Winifred married a Scottish boatswain, Henry James Sutherland. They were married at the Registrar General's Office, in Sydney. Once again, this relationship did not last. It is unclear as to when this relationship ended, as there are not records of a divorce, and no family recollection of Henry Sutherland.
Winifred finally found a long term relationship with Bill Mawson (Eric William Mawson - possibly Darcy William Mawson). Although Winifred's death certificate states that they married in Brisbane, around 1919, there are no official documents to support this claim. Bill Mawson was the informant on Winifred's death certificate. She passed away on 19th April, 1961, at Lealholm Private Hospital in Ashfield, New South Wales. Winifred was cremated on 21st April, 1961.
