Biography

Henry Clay Singleton was born in Kentucky in Aug 1851.

An H. C. Singleton, of Nashville, Tenn, enlisted in Co. B, 1 Tenn Cav Btn on 25 May 1861. Our Henry Clay Singleton would have been only 10 yrs old, so this is unlikely to be him, but perhaps it is his father with the same initials.

Henry C. Singleton is listed in the 1900 Census of Davidson, Tennessee: Henry C. Singleton (age 48, b. Aug 1851 in Kentucky; both parents born Kentucky) Annie C. (wife, age 35, b. Aug 1864 in Mississippi; father born Ala, mother born Ga) Emma M. (11, b. Oct 1888 in Georgia) [Emma Mae Singleton, m. Waring] Daniel B. (7, b. July 1892 in Georgia) Henry L. (2, b. Dec 1897 in Georgia) Also listed in this household are Mr. Singleton's sister-in-law and nephew. Henry C. Singleton is listed as a "Pickle Salesman".

A 1904 Nashville city directory lists a "Pickle Manufacturer" named Henry C. Singleton residing at 955 Wood- Sirnott. Katherine, sales 213 N Summer, h land. 812 Grand av

The 1910 Census of Houston, Texas lists: H. C. Singleton (56, b. Kentucky, both parent born Kentucky "pickle maker, own shop") Annie Singleton (45, b. Miss, both parents born Miss) Dan Singleton (17, b. Georgia) Henry Singleton (11, b. Georgia)

In the 1920 Census of Houston, Texas, this family is listed as: Henry C. Singleton (66, b. Kentucky, both parents born Kentucky,"pickle mfg") Annie C. Singleton (55, b. Missouri, father born Ala, mother born Ga) Daniel B. Singleton (27, b. Georgia) Henry L. Singleton (22, b. Georgia)

A 1924 Texas Death Certificate seems indicates an H. C. Singleton died, of auto-pedestrian accident, on 7 March 1924. This certificate, filled out by his son H. L. Singleton, lists his DOB as Aug 1853 instead of the Aug 1851 recorded in the 1900 Census (which was reported by HCS himself at age 48), and his calculated age at death was then reported as 70 years, 7 months, 1 day; presumably his birthdate was then 6 Aug 1853 (or 6 Aug 1851 if the 1900 Census is more credible). The certificate records his place of birth as Georgetown, Kentucky. His residence in 1924 was listed as Saltus Street; in the 1920 Census his residence was just a few blocks away on German (now Canal) Street.

The death certificate indicates he was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Houston.

His widow, Annie C. [Couch] Singleton died in 1932 (see her profile for more info).
