Biography

Joseph was born in 1782.

That Joseph Sizemore was the son of John Sizemore comes from an article in the Virginia Argus, published multiple times in the Spring of 1805 to summon to the Halifax County Court the legatees of their father: "Daniel Sizemore, George Sizemore, Solomon Sizemore,' John Sizemore, William Sizemore, Hiram Sizemore, Mary Sizemore, and Joseph Sizemore, the heirs and representatives of John Sizemore, dec. [1]

Joseph married Martha "Patsy" or "Polly" Fitts/Fitz, daughter of Robert Walker Fitts, and together they had numerous children.

That Joseph son of John was also the Joseph who married Martha Fitts is supported by a combination of evidence: Joseph and Martha named a son named Tandy (mentioned in a chancery case of the John Goode family).[citation needed] In addition, Martha Fitts Sizemore had a brother named Tandy Walker Fitts.[citation needed]

He may have been the Virginia Joseph Sizemore who served in the War of 1812.[2]

Joseph lived in Stokes, NC for some time[3] before returning to Halifax, VA before his death.

NOTE: We cannot find him in 1850; his wife was head of household in Stokes.

He was counted in Halifax, Virginia, aged 78 and born in Virginia, on the 1860 US Census with the following household:[4]

Wm H Waddleton, 24
Joseph Sizemore, 78
Dosia, aged 31
William R, aged 10
Adolphus, aged 7
John M, aged 2
John M, aged 21

All were said to have been born in Virginia.

He passed away in 1861.

In a Halifax, Virginia chancery case of the John Goode family (an allied family of the Sizemores), Tandy Sizemore is mentioned. He is a son of Joseph and Martha and they also have a son together named Sandford/Sanford that helps tie things together. These are Fitts family names as Martha had brothers of those names. Joseph's brother, Solomon, is a deponent in the case where he mentions taking a trip south with "Waker Fitts" (Robert Walker Fitts, Martha's father, Joseph's father-in-law).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

Joseph was likely born in Halifax, Virginia and died there but lived in Stokes, NC for many years in between. His likely children are: Parthenia "Theny", Tabitha Sizemore Baker, Rebecca Sizemore Bennett, Eletha "Lethy" Sizemore Ashby, Sarah Ann "Sally" Sizemore, John W. Sizemore, Sanford Sizemore, Eddie Ann Sizemore Mabe, Docia A. Sizemore, William Henry Sizemore, Martha Jane Sizemore King, Missouria Sizemore Stevenson. There are possibly a couple more. I will let others just take this information as a lead to follow up and do their own research to confirm or dispute. He is the likely son of John Henderson Sizemore and Mary "Molly" Gregory.

The census records suggest that Joseph and Martha separated. She was head of household in 1850 in Stokes, NC. We can't find him anywhere that year. In 1860, he was in Halifax, VA but without Martha. She supposedly died in 1864 (although no source is provided for that death date), so should still be living in 1860.

I can't find him or Docia (who was in the same household with him in 1860) anywhere in 1850, either. It's likely he was back in Halifax, though.

He and his sister, Polly Chamberlane (Mary Sizemore), file a lawsuit in Halifax Co. in 1856. It's index # is 1856-001. Joseph Sizemore, etc. vs. Thomas Torian, Sr. In it they are claiming they were defrauded because they were illiterate and a contract they put their X on wasn't what was verbally agreed upon. It's a property dispute. They also say they are poor, except for that land.
