A large collection of family group sheets and letters, provided by those listed in Acknowlegements below, is the basis for this profile, with the hope of bolstering or negating by citations. His linkage to a father is extremely conjectural as are linkages to this man as a father. The census evidence is confusing. Death cert information might clarify this, but such sources are not primary evidence and not unimpeachable.
Willis Street Slaten/Slaton Sr. was born in 1829. He was probably the son of Wade Slaton and Mary Tucker.
He passed away in 1912.
Surname- As is common in this lineage, both Slaton and Slaten spellings are found in records. A possible point of confusion is that Willis Staton is found in Hall County, Georgia records, and is traceably a Staton and presumably not a Slaton.
Birthplace - Inconsistently reported, some census say South Carolina, some say Georgia. His conjectured father Wade apparently moved from South Carolina to Georgia and then to Marshall County Alabama by about 1847, and 1850 census household of Wade Slaten gives South Carolina as birthplace for Willis, aged 22, laborer (listed last). [1] Issue of Wade in 1850 show a pattern of daughter Sarah aged 28, b SC, then Georgia births from about 1837 until 1847, suggesting that Wade (or his wife) had moved to Alabama from Georgia between 1843 and 1847. Although such census reports are not always accurate, either South Carolina or Georgia could be a likely birthplace for Willis Street Slaten Sr.
Red Flags? - Willis is enumerated last in the 1850 Marshall County Alabama census household of Wade, [1] as a 22-year-old laborer, sometimes interpreted as indicating that he is not a son of the head of the household. Other researchers have suggested that this is because Willis had married by 1848. although no wife is listed in that 1850 census household. If a son, why is he not listed below Wade's implied daughter Sarah and before the younger children, married or not? 28-year-old Sarah appears to be overwritten an illegible entry that was almost certainly Willis.
Marriages and Issue:
Willis Slaten was licensed to marry R Elizabeth Reeve, 21 Feb 1848 [2]. Family group sheets give her first given name as Ruth. It is not clear if this marriage was solemnized, but there seem to be no surviving children, using census birth dates as clues.,
Willis Slaten was licensed to marry Mary F. Slaten, 1 July 1854 in Marshall County, Alabama [3]. Their marriage was solemnized by Isaac Childress. [4] She is almost certainly his cousin, but he had so many "blood cousins" named Mary that it is unclear if she was born as a Slaton, or one of the several Childress or Reeve/Reeves women who were widows of a Slaton.
Children by Mary are surmised as Hulda Jane, Martha Ann, George A., William H., Sarah T., Richard T or W., John S. and Amanda E. Slaten .
W. S. Slaten or Slaton married Nancy E. Brooks, 23 July 1873, in Marshall County, Alabama, at G. Broke's [Brooks?] house. [5] she reportedly born ranging from 1831 to 1841 in North Carolina.
Children by Nancy: Andrew Franklin "Frank", Mary Hannah, Malisa J., Josie Esther (twin), Siney C. (female, twin), Samuel D. and Willis Street ((Jr.) Slaten.
Siney? C. does not continue in census; she might have died young or married out of the household by 1900. This requires further research. The loss of the 1890 census is particularly felt here.
NOTE: an imaged gravestone for daughter Malisa J (Slaten) Thompson reads as "Daughter of W.S. & W.E. Slaten" suggesting that either Nancy was a nickname, or that a mistake was made in the making of this stone.[6], whereas a stone for son Samuel D. reads as "Son of W.S. & N.E. Slaten. [7]
Red Flag? - Note that records show Willis b abt 1829 and Mary b 1835 to be the implied parents of children born as late as 1871, and Willis and Nancy, whose reported age is not stable, as implied parents of children born as late as 1886. A reported birth of abt 1841 in one census for Nancy as mother is plausible, but another as abt 1831 seems questionable for her as continuing to bear children until 1886, although it is possible.
Residence - Census:
Willis Sr. lived in Marshall County and later, in or near the area known as Pinhook, just north of Bankhead National Forest in Lawrence County, Alabama.
1860 Marshall County, Alabama, Eastern Division, Guntersville, page 82 [8] Listed last in the household is Henry Slaton, 16, born Georgia, laborer. This is almost certainly Willis's younger brother Henry D Slaten (1844-1922).
Willis shares this 1860 census page with Isaac Chidress's family, and on the next page is Ruben Reeves, Waid Slaton (conjectured father) and Loven Slaton (conjectured uncle).

25 June,1900 U.S. census for Precinct 8 Pin Hook, ED 78, Lawrence, Alabama. Willis S. Slaten, wife Nancy , and family. [11] Years of present marriage is reported as 28, clearly 10 years off for their 1873 marriage. Nancy is reported as having 8 children, 6 living.
1910 Pinhook, Lawrence, Alabama, sheet 3B. Willis S. and Nancy E. Slaten [12] In the household is son Street W. Slaten, 22, married once, 0 years, his wife not present in in household, and Frank A. Slaten and wife and family in the next household, another son of this couple.
Military:
Co F, 49th Alabama Infantry, Capt Bain's Co of Marshall Co, CSA, corporal, captured at Port Hudson, Louisiana.
