Biography

His 1787 death record from the parish registers confirms that he was husband of Anna Catharine "Hoef" and says that he was about (circiter) 60 when he died, implying a birth year of 1727.[1] Her surname was actually probably Hoes. See the children's baptisms.

Parents

There was a Henricus baptised in 1725, but he must have died young, because the same parents, Guilielmus Smets and Elisabeth Cortens, had another Henricus baptised in 1736.

Furthermore, a god mother to some of his children was his sister Joanna, and the church record for his last child says he was born in Nieuwrode. Joanna was the name of the eldest child of Guilielmus and Elisabeth.

Guilielmus Smets and Elisabeth Cortens married 28 Feb 1719 in Nieuwrode. Witnesses were Adrianus Cortens and Laurentius Smets. The name Laurentius Smets links to the earlier family in Nieuwrode of Wilhelmus Smets and Maria Cockaerts, whose family also had connections to the south (the other direction away from Gelrode) in Houwaart and St Pieters Rode. This couple had 5 children baptised in Nieuwrode in the 1660s and 1670s including Laurentius, and at least one child in St Pieters Rode in 1681 and possibly another in 1685 where they are called a Houwaart couple. St Pieters Rode had spiritual jurisdiction over many neighbouring areas. Guilielmus might be a grandson of Guilielmus and Maria, or a son in his second marriage? (Laurentius seems to have had his children in Houwaart quite late in life, with a son Guillielmus in 1714 for example.)

Death

Possibly Guilielmus died 7 March 1750, marked in the actagena transcription as the husband of Elisabeth Ceuppens? (The register seems to mention no wife? Probably the conclusion comes from looking at the later death of such an Elisabeth in 1762.)[2]

Wife

The baptisms spell his wife's surname Hoos or Hoes, and call her Anna or Anna Catharina. There was a Hoos baptism of this name in St Pieters Rode 17 Feb 1746. The parents, Joannes Hoos and Catharina Meijnaerts, had married in Vlasselaar, which is near Nieuwrode. This appears to be her.

Looking at Wezemaal (where Vlasselaar is today) there is a marriage 17 May 1759 for Henricus Smets and Maria Vanhoovelt (cum dispensatione in 3 bannis). Despite the different name this is interesting because the witnesses, Petrus Vervoort and Arnoldus Beckx, can be compared to the godparents this family had in Nieuwrode. On the other hand it appears Vlasselaar was once under church jurisdiction of St Pieters Rode.[3] Another baptism there, but probably too early, was Anna Catharina Hoes, 22 March 1730, daughter of Joannes Hoes and Anna Cremer. These parents were also married in Vlasselaar.
