Charles Smith was born in Kingston, Sussex, England.

Charles Alfred Smith was born on 4 Jul 1858 in Kingston, Sussex, England to Richard Henry Smith and Rebecca Weller.[1] He was baptised on 2 Aug 1857 at Kingston.[2]

He lived with his parents in Kingston until his marriage.[3] [4]

Charles married Maria Catherine Miller in the second quarter of 1879 in Brighton, Sussex.[5] They had thirteen children:

They initially lived in Brighton to raise their family while Alfred worked as a general labourer.[6] By 1891, they were living in South Norwood, Croydon, Surrey. Alfred was working as a waggon examiner (railway carriage examiner).[7] [8] [9] By 1911 Charles was working as a gardener.

Charles Alfred Smith died on 4 Feb 1924 in the district of Croydon and was buried in the Croydon Cemetery (now the Mitcham Road Cemetery).[10] [11] He was 67 years old.
