They initially lived in Brighton to raise their family while Alfred worked as a general labourer.[6] By 1891, they were living in South Norwood, Croydon, Surrey. Alfred was working as a waggon examiner (railway carriage examiner).[7][8][9] By 1911 Charles was working as a gardener.
Charles Alfred Smith died on 4 Feb 1924 in the district of Croydon and was buried in the Croydon Cemetery (now the Mitcham Road Cemetery).[10][11] He was 67 years old.
