Charles Smith was born in Kingston, Sussex, England.

Charles Alfred Smith was born on 4 Jul 1858 in Kingston, Sussex, England to Richard Henry Smith and Rebecca Weller.^[1] He was baptised on 2 Aug 1857 at Kingston.^[2]

He lived with his parents in Kingston until his marriage.^{[3] [4]}

Charles married Maria Catherine Miller in the second quarter of 1879 in Brighton, Sussex.^[5] They had thirteen children:

• Bertie Harry Smith 1893-1935

They initially lived in Brighton to raise their family while Alfred worked as a general labourer.^[6] By 1891, they were living in South Norwood, Croydon, Surrey. Alfred was working as a waggon examiner (railway carriage examiner).^{[7] [8] [9]} By 1911 Charles was working as a gardener.

Charles Alfred Smith died on 4 Feb 1924 in the district of Croydon and was buried in the Croydon Cemetery (now the Mitcham Road Cemetery).^{[10] [11]} He was 67 years old.
