Biography

Thomas Smith was born about 1826 in England. He was the son of Aaron Smith and Hannah Kinsey. The family immigrated to the U.S. when Thomas was 9 years old. They had a farm in Summit County, Ohio.

Thomas married Catherine M. Holmes on December 5, 1852 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. They had five children during their marriage: Nellie L. (died when she was 15yrs), Mary Alice, Ida, Herbert Kinsy, and Howard. They had a farm in Richfield Township, Summit County, Ohio.

In the 1870 agricultural census, they reported 60 improved acres, 16 acres of wood land, real estate value of $4,000 and personal estate value of $500. They owned 3 horses, 1 milch cow, 3 sheep, and 4 swine. They grew spring wheat, Indian corn, oats and barley. At the time of the census, Thomas was 44yrs and Catherine was 34yrs (children: Mary A. 13yrs, Ida M. 7yrs, and Kinsy 1 month).

In the 1880 census, they were still farming: Thomas 56yrs, Catharine 44yrs, Kinsy Herbert 10yrs, and S. Howard 8yrs. In the census record, Catherine said her father was born in New York and her mother was born in Connecticut.
