Joseph was born about 1820. He passed away about 1862. Joseph married Harriet Caroline Lee on October 23, 1839 in Hardeman County, Tennessee. His brother George W. Smith married Harriet Lee's sister Esther in July 1841 (also in Hardeman County, TN) and his brother Daniel married Harriet and Esther's first cousin Tranquilla Lee in 1843 in Johnson County, AR.
