James Smith was born about 1826. He was baptised on 4 December 1826, his parents being George and Philadelphia Smith. George was a farmer residing at Wadhurst, Sussex.[1]
The 1841 English Census for the County of Sussex, Parish of Wadhurst, shows James Smith, aged 10 born Sussex, living with his parents George and Philadelphia Smith at New House Wadhurst. Other Smith's at the address are Samuel aged 25, George 25, William 20, Robert 15, James 10, Charity 10, Joseph 10, Thomas 4,and Charity 15.[2]
James Smith, aged 21, married Ellen Fuller, aged 19, at Ticehurst in 26 September 1847. James' father is given as George Smith, farmer, and Ellen Fuller's father is given as Rose Fuller, farmer. Both are residing at Ticehurst. Witnesses are John Fuller and Charity Smith.[3][4]
The 1851 English Census for the County of Sussex, Parish of Wadhurst, shows Ellen Smith, aged 23 born Brightling, living with her husband James Smith, aged 25, Agricultural Labourer born Wadhurst. Their two children, Fanny aged 2 and Joseph W 1 month are living with them at Bestbeech Hill.[5]
The 1861 English Census for the County of Sussex, Parish of Wadhurst, shows Ellen Smith, aged 31 born Brightling, living with husband James Smith, aged 33 Agricultural Labourer, born Wadhurst. Their seven children, Fanny aged 12, Joseph W 10, David 8, George 6, Horace 5, Charity 2 and Albert 1 month, all born Wadhurst, are living with them at Best Beech Hill.[6]
The 1871 English Census for the County of Sussex, Parish of Wadhurst, shows Elanor Smith, aged 43 born Brightling, living with husband James Smith, aged 45 Inn Keeper and farmer of 37 acres, born Wadhurst. Their ten children, Joseph W aged 20, David 18, George 16, Horace 14, Charity 12, Albert 9, Elizabeth 7, Eleanor 5, Mary Jane 4, and Rosa 2, all born Wadhurst, are living at Hare and Hounds Inn. They have servant Mary J Nesman aged 17, and lodgers William Banfield widower 56 shepherd, and William Brocker aged 14 shepherd, also living with them.[7]
The 1881 English Census for the County of Sussex, Parish of Wadhurst, shows Eleanor Smith, aged 50 born Brightling, living with husband James Smith, aged 55 Agricultural Labourer, born Wadhurst. Their two children Charity aged 22, and Rosa 12, both born Wadhurst are living with them at Cold Harbour. George Smith born Hastings, nurse child (taken in to nurse) aged 3, is also living with them.
The 1891 English Census for the County of Sussex, Parish of Wadhurst, shows Eleanor Smith, aged 61 born Brightling, living with husband James Smith, aged 53 born Wadhurst Agricultural Labourer. Their child Mary J, aged 24 single is living with them. James' brother Thomas Smith, widower aged 53 Agricultural Labourer born Wadhurst, is living with them as is Frederick G Smith, boarder aged 13 scholar, born Hastings. The address is Bassels Farm.[8]

The 1901 English Census for the County of Sussex, Parish of Mayfield, part of the hamlet of Tidebrook, shows Eleanor Smith, aged 74 born Brightling, living with husband James Smith, aged 75 Farm Labourer born Wadhurst. They are living at Stonehouse with George F Smith, boarder single aged 23 born Hastings.[9]
The 1911 English Census for the County of Sussex, Heathfield, shows Eleanor Smith, aged 83, born Brightling, living with husband James Smith aged 84, late farm labourer pensioned, born Wadhurst. They are living with their son-in-law, Levi Grant and daughter Charity Grant nee Smith. The census states Eleanor and James have been married 64 years and have had 11 children born alive of which 9 are still living.[10]
James Smith died in on 29 May 1911 at Heathfield, Sussex, England.[11]
