Biography

Cpl William Smith served in the United States Civil War.

William Harrison Smith was my paternal 2nd great grandfather. He was born in 1842 in Wise County, Virginia to Thomas Smith and Anna (Stringfellow) Smith . [1] He was one of four children, His siblings were: Benjamin Harrison Smith, Mary (Smith) Back, and John J. Smith.

William completed his Civil War Draft registration on July 1, 1863 when he was 21. [2] He was a Confederate soldier and served in the B Company, 5th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry from 1863-1865 . [3]

The 5th Infantry Regiment was assembled during the late summer of 1861 and included Freeman's Kentucky Infantry Battalion. These soldiers were raised in the counties of Pendleton, Breathitt, Morgan, Magoffin, Bath, Owen, Grant, Jessamine, Henderson, Harrison, Shelby, and Franklin. The regiment reported 134 casualties in the Battle of Shiloh, then was active at Baton Rouge before being assigned to Kelly's and J.H. Lewis' Brigade, Army of Tennessee. The 5th Infantry Regiment was prominent at Chickamauga and later took an active part in the Atlanta Campaign. In the fall of 1864 it was mounted, aided in the defense at Savannah, and fought in the Carolinas. The unit had 91 men disabled at Chickamauga, and surrendered on April 26, 1865.[4]

He married Permelia Combs in 1876 and had five children-John Wesley Smith, Eliza Smith, Richard Smith, Lillian (Smith) Lovely and Aaron Smith. [5] William and Permelia Combs were married over 43 years .[6]

According to the 1920 census,he was widowed by age 77 and living with his son Richard Lee until his death. [7] He passed away in 1925 in Toms Branch, Morgan, Kentucky and was buried in Higgins Cemetery. [8] The Cemetery is located off Route 3343 in Artville Jackson, KY 41339.[9]
