Biography

John was born on 5 April 1865 in Biddenham, Bedfordshire, the 8th child of Boteler Smith and Selina Couchman. He was baptised John Chernock Smith on 18 June 1865 in Biddenham, Bedfordshire.

In the 1871 England Census he was living at Hulcote Rectory, Bedfordshire, a scholar aged 5, with his father Boteler C Smith (45), his mother, Selina S Smith (39), and his siblings, Edith EB Smith (11), Villiers C Smith (9), Margaret S Smith (4), Mary J Smith (3), Janet H Smith (1) and Emily F Smith (<3 months).

In the 1881 England Census he was listed living at Thornton in Fylde, Lancashire, aged 15, a scholar.

In the 1891 England Census he was living at 83 Ghuse Hill Road, Handsworth, Staffordshire. Here he is aged 26, a Bankers Clerk, boarding with a Barrister, Joseph Warren (60) and his wife Anneth Warren (50).

In the 1911 England Census he was living at 18 West Street, Maidstone, Kent aged 45. He is listed as a Bank Manager, with his wife of 6 years, Charlotte Matilda Charnock Smith (41). He was also living with his daughter, Ursula Charnock Smith (5), his widowed mother, Selina Sarah Chernocke Smith (79), nephew John Ridyard Taylor (11), cook Fanny Didge (23) and Parlour-maid Edith Mortimer (19).

In the 1939 England and Wales Register he was living at 33 Church Road, Ampthill, Bedfordshire, aged 65, a retired Bank Manager, with his wife Charlotte Charnock Smith (69).

The Probate Records show he was living at Pine Cottage, Aspley Heath, Bedfordshire.

He passed away on 4 June 1946 at the age of 81.
