Biography
Mary Ann Smith
She was born about 1814 (at Stebbing, Essex according to 1851/1861 census returns).[1] At her marriage, her father is described as William Smith, a builder.
She married Henry Marriott at St George Hanover Square, Middlesex on 25 April 1835.[2] They had at least six children:
In White's directory of 1848, Mary's husband Henry Marriott was listed as a saddler, at The Bell, Stebbing, Essex. [3] In directories of 1851/52 he is listed as Sadler and post office. By 1855 Mrs A Marriott is listed at The Bell, Stebbing. [4] In 1856, as landlady on the Bell, Mary Ann Marriott appeared in a report in the Essex Standard of 8th Feb 1853. She was fined 9s 6d for opening The Bell in illegal hours on Christmas day 1852. [5]
She was the mother of an illegitimate child, Ellen Jane Marriott in 1853 [7]
In 15 Jan 1858 Mary Ann appeared a report in the Chelmsford chronicle. The reports states that Mary Ann Marriott, who resided at Stebbing, was returning from Stratford railway station when she had her purse stolen, containing a sovereign and three crowns. [8]
Mary remarried on 4 Feb 1859 to George Gregory at St John's church, Bethnal green, London.[9] They had one daughter, before George's death in 1865. [10] Following George's death Mary seems to have reverted to her first married name of Marriott. It is how she appears in the 1871 census return, and the name under which she remarried in 1880.
She married thirdly, as his third wife, George Edgley, a coach builder, on 20 Sep 1874 at St James the Great, Bethnal Green, London. [11]
George Edgley, Mary's third husband died in 1880. [12][13][14]
At the 1901 census she is living with daughter Ellen and her husband Edward Hill. [15]
Mary Ann died in 1902, being buried in Camberwell old cemetary, on 18 Apr 1902. [16][17] She was said to be aged 88 years.
Research notes
At her second and third marriages, Mary's father is stated both times as being William Smith, builder. We know from the census returns that she was born c.1814 at Stebbing, Essex. The only William Smith to have been baptising children at Stebbing, Essex c.1814 is William Smith, a carpenter and his wife Elizabeth (nee Clarke). It seems a reasonable assumption that these are Mary Ann's parents, especially as at a trial in 1832 William Smith of Stebbing was described as "carpenter and builder" [18]
