Mary (Smith) Lockwood was a New Yorker.

Mary (Smith) (Arnett) Lockwood[1] was born on the 24th of October 1833 in Hanover, Chautauqua, New York.[2][3][4] Her parents are said to be Henry Benjamin Smith and Beulah (Blodgett) Smith.

Mary married Henry C. Lockwood, a Civil War veteran.[3][4] In the 1855 census of New York, Mary is age 23, consistent with birth in 1831. "New York State Census, 1855", database with images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K6SG-H82 : Fri Oct 06 17:26:47 UTC 2023), Entry for Henry C Lockwood and Mary S Lockwood, 1855.

In the 1860 census Mary (age 28) was in Silver Creek, Chautauqua, New York.[5] Her husband Henry (age 30) did not have an occupation listed.[5] Their son Rodney was just four years old.[5]

In the 1870 census M (age 38), Keeping House, was in Baltimore Ward 20, Baltimore, Maryland.[6] Henry (age 40) was working as a communications merchant.[6] They owned $1,200 of personal estate but no real estate.[6] Four-month-old Lillian was in the home, but Rodney wasn't.[6] They also housed E. S. Munger (50), Charles Lockwood (68), Lucia Coleman (Servant, 19), and Frances Wilson (20).[6]

On the 13th of July 1890, after the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) refused to let women into their group, Mary published the story of patriot Hannah White Arnett in The Washington Post, ending her piece with the question, "Where will the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution place Hannah Arnett?"[7][8] The Daughters of the American Revolution was officially founded on the 11th of October 1890, with the first meeting taking place in Mary's home.[7] Mary was also the Daughters of the American Revolution's first historian.[7]

In 1910 Mary applied for a passport.[2] She stated that she was a widow of a "native born citizen."[2] Her occupation was one of leisure.[2] She was described as being seventy-seven years old, standing five feet and one-quarter inches tall, with a broad forehead, blue eyes, a straight nose and mouth, a square chin, with white hair, a fair complexion, and an oval face.[2] Her permanent residence was listed as being in Washington D.C..[2]

Mary died on the 9th of November 1922 in Plymouth, Massachusetts.[3][4][9][10] She was ninety-one years old.[3] She was the last survivor of the group of eighteen women patriots who organized the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) organization.[3][4] Mary was survived by no close relatives.[3][4]
