Biography

David W. SMITH was born in September of 1859 in Cartersville, Cass County, Georgia. He was the son of Samuel Harlan SMITH (1829-1873), a Methodist minister and printer, and Sarah Winters LEAKE (1838-1901). He and his older brother, Fletcher, were raised in Samuel Harlan’s print shop.

David’s father died when David was only 14 years old, and a few years later, his mother, Sallie, remarried to a Baptist minister and printer. David probably worked in his step-father’s print shop. Once out on his own, David, continued working as a printer in northwest Georgia. It seems that he was never married.

He worked for local papers in Haralson County. In 1920, David was working on the Buchanan Tribune. I n 1924, David W. Smith died, probably in Buchanan, Haralson County, Georgia. He was buried near his parents in Cartersville, Bartow County, Georgia.
