Biography

Cottnam Tonge Smith was born September 3, 1861 in Chester, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia to Robert Smith and Eliza Comingo. Like his Father, Cottnam took up the occupation of a Blacksmith. On September 24, 1885 in Chester, Cottnam, at the age of 24, married Lavannah Webber by Baptist Lisence. They had at least two children. Lavannah, known as Vannie, died in 1895. His second marriage was on December 22, 1896 in Chester by Baptist Lisence to Mary A. Walker. There were at least three children from this union with a male child stillborn June 1911. He worked as a Blacksmith and Magistrate until 1958! Cottnam died March 6, 1962 in Chester at the age of 100 years 6 months 3 days and is buried in the Old Burial Grounds, Chester, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia.
