Biography

Baptized 27 Oct 1813 in Osmotherley, York, England.

Rev. Matthew married Elizabeth Bovyer. They had two children. Christopher and Margaret. [1]

"Matthew Smith of Crapaud presented himself to the quarterly meeting of the Bedeque circuit and asked to be recommended to district meeting, which upon learning that he had read Benson, Fletcher and Wesley, had served three years as a local preachers, was not in debt of married, received him on trial and sent him to Ship Harbor for his first year as assistant minister. ..Smith showed signs of going into decline and his doctors advised a voyage for the good of his health. He stayed a winter [in England] with an aunt who was a persuasive Baptist. Upon his return he was both cured and converted. He formed a new church, "The Wesleyian Association". This later became the Westmoreland Baptist Church. " [2]

Matthew went to New Brunswick.

Petitcodiac (West. Co.) Feb. 3 - The friends of Rev. Matthew SMITH will be sorry to hear that he is lying dangerously ill at Anagance (Kings Co.) For over seven weeks he has suffered intensely with an ulcerated leg and rheumatism. [4]
