Biography
Louis Snaer is a part of US Black heritage.
Major Louis Snaer served in the United States Civil War. Side: USA Regiment(s): 73rd Regiment, United States Colored Infantry
Louis was born in 1842 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Of French Creole background, he was the son of Francois Snaer and Emiren Beluche.
He was one of a few black soldiers to be commissioned as an officer in the Civil War. He was appointed as a Captain in the 73rd U.S. Colored Troops, and later promoted to Major for his bravery. He was wounded during the battle of Fort Blakely in Alabama, one of the last battles of the war.
He married Marie Antoinette Emma "Emma" Gandolfi around 1880. They had at least 5 children. The family moved to California sometime after their youngest child was born in 1892, and before 1900 when they were living in San Francisco along with Emma's mother Elizabeth. Louis was a produce merchant at the time. By 1910 they had moved across the bay to Oakland, California, and his occupation was listed as Clerk.
He passed away in Los Angeles, California in 1917 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in East Los Angeles.
