Biography

Harry was born in 1881. Harry Sneller-Webber. His mother (Jane Sneller) married Edward John Coleman in 1884. The 1891 census shows Harry as "Harry Coleman." My grandfather joined the RMLI (Royal Marines Light Infantry) on 25 March 1898. He wasn't old enough to join on this date, so he entered a false date of birth - 14 March 1880 - as was his desire to join up. 1903 promoted to Corporal 1910 promoted to Sergeant, whilst serving aboard HMS Magnificent. 1914 to 1918 served on HMS Patrol during WW1. 25th March 1919 discharged to pension, retired as Colour Sergeant. 26th March 1919 employed as tally clerk by Southern Railway, in Richborough, England. May 1922 joined H.M. Military Police in Chatham, Kent. 23rd September 1926 promoted to sergeant at H.M. Dockyard Rosyth. 9th April 1929 served as Station Sergeant at H.M. Dockyard Sheerness. 29th May 1933 promoted to Inspector in H.M. Dockyard Portsmouth. 14th March 1937 retired after reaching age limit for Inspectors of 57 at H.M. Dockyard Portsmouth. April 1937 started work at Royal Armament Depot Hillsea, Portsmouth, as a Provision Clerk. 23rd December 1947 permanent Sidesmans - served until his death at St. Andrew's Church, Eastney, Portsmouth, Hampshire.

He passed away in 1969 after a short illness at 93, Ringwood Road, Eastney, Portsmouth. [1]

Most of the above dates were obtain through an article written by Harry in 1969. The article was to be published in a Royal Marine publication titled "50 years a Pensioner". The article was never published, as he passed away shortly after.
