Franklin Benjamin Snow, known as "Franklin," to differentiate him from his father, was born in 19 February 1843 on his parents' farm in North Ridgeville, Lorain County, Ohio, USA. He was the son of Benjamin Franklin Snow, b: 1805 in Massachusetts, and his wife, Diana (Bartlet) Snow, b: 1812 in Connecticut. On the 1850 US Census, "Franklin" Snow was recorded as 6 years old, born in Ohio, living with his parents, 44 and 38 years old, respectively, and 6 siblings, all in Ridgeville Township, Lorain County, Ohio, USA. [1]
Ten years later, the 1860 US Census recorded Benjamin Franklin Snow's family, including 16-year-old "Franklin" Snow, as having moved to Troy, Sauk County, Wisconsin, United States. Franklin was one of the couple's 8 children, all born in Ohio, helping their parents on their "General Farm". The farm was valued at $1,000 US dollars & their personal property at $200 US dollars. Franklin and his older brother were "Farm Laborers". [2]
On 13 February 1870, in Saulk County, Wisconsin, Franklin B. Snow, almost 27, married 19-year-old Josephine E. Case, b: 20 Sep 1850 in Racine Co., Wisconsin.[3] The couple had 11 children:
The June 1870 US Census recorded the couple as 25 and 19 years old, married and living on their farm in Arenas Township, Iowa County, Wisconsin, USA. They had no children as yet. [4] Their first daughter, Edith E. Snow, was born there on 27 February 1871. When Edith was about a year old, Franklin & Josephine moved to Jewell County, Kansas. They would live there with frequent return trips to Wisconsin for the next 25+ years. A majority of their children were born on their farm there.
The 1880 US Census recorded "H. B. Snow" [sic=F. B. Snow], age 35, and his wife, Josephine Snow, 30 years old, living on their farm in Vicksburg Township, Jewell County, Kansas, USA. Only their infant daughter, Olive Snow, b: Jan 1880 in Kansas, was living with them. F. B. Snow was a "Farmer". [5]
The 1890 US Census was accidentally destroyed and is not available. Franklin B. Snow and his family left Jewell County, Kansas, shortly after the railroad linked Kansas to the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, now north-east Oklahoma, in 1889. They joined other American farmers now allowed to buy land in what was still "Indian Territory," USA. Their last 2 sons: Henry "Bushyhead" Snow, b: 24 April 1891, and John Edwin Snow, b: 23 October 1894, were born in Noxie (Nowata County), Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, USA. This area borders southern Kansas.
Franklin Benjamin "Franklin" Snow passed away on 13 March 1900 on his farm at "Timber Hill," Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, USA (in Nowata County, Oklahoma, today). He was 57 years old. His body was buried just across the Territory boundary at Robbins Cemetery, Coffeyville, Montgomery County, Kansas, USA. [6]
Frank's wife, Josephine E. (Case) Snow, survived his passing. The 1 June 1900 US Census recorded her as 50 years old, a widow, living in ED 9, Township 27, N. Range 16 E., Nowata County, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, USA.[7] She had 6 children living with her on their rented family farm. The Census stated only 6 of her 11 children were alive in June 1900: [8]
