William[1] Snowden was born in 1775 in South Carolina[2]. Around the beginning of the 19th century, he married Elizabeth Ann Thames, probably in South Carolina, possibly in Sumter County.

The household comprised five members: one male aged 16-25, one male aged 26-44, two females under 10, and one female aged 16-25. There were two household members under 16 and one member over 25.
At some point before the 1820s, he migrated to Alabama.[4]
In the 1830 Census,[5] William Snowden's household was recorded in Monroe, Alabama. The household consisted of 12 individuals: one male under 5, two males aged 5-9, one male aged 10-14, one male aged 15-19, one male aged 50-59, one female aged 5-9, one female aged 10-14, one female aged 40-49, one female aged 60-69, one male slave aged 24-35, and one female slave aged 10-23. Among them, seven were free white persons under 20, and one was aged 20-49, totaling 10 free white persons and 2 slaves.
In the 1840 Census,[6] Wm Snoden's residence was documented in Monroe, Alabama. The household included 10 individuals: one male aged 10-14, one male aged 15-19, one male aged 60-69, one female aged 10-14, one female aged 20-29, and one female aged 50-59, totaling six free white persons. There were also four slaves: two males aged 36-54, one female aged 10-23, and one female aged 24-35. Eight persons were employed in agriculture.
In 1850, he was working as a farmer and holding ten people enslaved, two Black men (55, 50), four Black women (43, 35, 30, 26 - "dumb from birth"), one Black boy (10), three Black girls (7, 6, 1).

Research Notes
His FamilySearch page (FamilySearch Person: 25F9-3JJ) currently has parents as Thomas Snowden Jr (1750–1803) and Ann Dorsey Ridgely (1754–1834), who both lived and died in Maryland. No indication there shows that they were ever in South Carolina. Does anyone have information about Snowdens in Sumter, South Carolina?
Does anyone have a source for William Snowden's marriage to Elizabeth Ann Thames, likely around 1800-1805 in South Carolina? There is an 1840 court record for a Thames that may be related to the two families. [7]
Is there a dependable source that lists his children?

↑ Some online trees give the middle name Jasper - is there any record that uses "Jasper" or "J"? It's not on the 1850 Census or Slave Schedule, nor is it on his headstone. Perhaps there's a family Bible or another record?
↑ Online trees give the location as Sumter County, SC. Is there a source or research proof for this? If so, please add it here!
