Summary: Vicente Sodré was a knight in the service of Order of Christ (previously known as the Knights Templar). King Manuel I of Portugal appointed him the first 'Capitão-mor do Mar da Índia' (Captain-major of the Indian Sea). Contradicting Vasco da Gama's orders in 1503, Vicente led his patrol to the Red Sea. Dismissing the warnings of the locals he refused to flee from a seasonal tempest, sinking with the ship at the age of (about) thirty-eight.
Vicente Sodré[1] was born in 1465. He was the son of João Sodré (also known as João de Resende) and Isabel Serrão.
He died when his ship sank off the coast of Al Hallaniyah Island, Oman, on April 30, 1503.
