Background

Broadway Plantation was owned by George Brownlee Clinkscales (1813 - 1864), son of Francis Bucher Clinkscales Jr. (1786 - 1858). According to the post-slavery memoirs of George's son John George Clinkscales (1855 - 1942) - entitled "On the Old Plantation: Reminiscences of His Childhood", Broadway covered 1,200 acres and was worked by as many as 110 slaves during J. G.'s childhood.
