What is the Military Challenge?

Everyone is invited to take part in the Military Challenge!

Our goal is to add sources to profiles for specific military veterans and connect them to the Global Family Tree.

The Military Challenge is different from other WikiTree challenges, like the Sourcerers Challenge and the Connectors Challenge, in that everyone will be provided with a list of profiles. We'll work together to add sources and connect them to the Global Family Tree. Each contribution you make will earn you points, and at the end of the month the points will be tallied and a special badge will be awarded to the winner.

How Does it Work?

Each month there will be a G2G thread where you can participate. On the thread, you'll find a list of profiles. For each profile, the following points will be awarded:

1 point for adding another source other than the provided source to the profile

Most of the profiles will have been created based on one source such as a roster or a book about local veterans. The provided source might have a lot of information, or a little. Either way, try to find another source to add to the profile. You will get one point total no matter how many sources you add. If the profile already has additional sources that were added by someone else, you won't get a point for adding more.

3 points for adding the profiles of each parent with correct Last Name at Birth (6 points for both parents)

Adding parents to a modern profile is the best first step toward connecting it to the Global Family Tree. Importantly, these profiles MUST have a source other than the original provided source to back them up. So if the provided source is a personnel record that gives the name of the service member's father as next of kin, creating the father will not count until an additional source is added. Before you create a profile for any parent, please try to find a source with a date or good estimate of an age!

3 points for adding a spouse with correct Last Name at Birth

The profile might not have a spouse, but if it does, you'll get points for adding one--as long as you have the correct LNAB backed up new sources, just like with the parents! If the profile happens to have more than one spouse, you can get 3 points for EACH spouse with correct LNAB!

10 points for connecting the profile to the Global Family Tree

This is the hardest one, so it's worth the most points! Not all Military Challenge profiles will connect to the tree. In some cases, we just might not have enough information. But that won't stop us from trying!

Example

Private James Smith is on the G2G list of profiles. The only source on his profile is a unit roster.

Bob adds a census record from familysearch to James Smith's profile and gets 1 point. Sarah finds a different census record and adds that one too, even though she knows Bob already got the point.

Sarah adds both of the parents for James Smith and gets 6 points.

Sarah is able to add one set of grandparents, but she can't find any connection to the tree. Bob adds James Smith's wife and, luckily, is able to connect her to the tree.

James Smith's challenge is now complete! Sarah receives 6 points (for adding the parents). Bob receives 14 points (for adding a source, adding the wife and connecting the profile).

Crossover with Other Challenges

Any connections you make for the Military Challenge can ALSO count for the Connectors Challenge!

Writing biographies is not currently credited for the Military Challenge, but if you want to write a bio for a Military Challenge profile, this WILL count for the Bio Builders Challenge!

Importantly, sourcing Military Challenge profiles does NOT count for the Sourcerers Challenge. Military Challenge profiles are never Unsourced--they always have at least one source to start with.

What About Military Categories and Templates?

This challenge is focused on connecting men and women who served to their families, so adding categories and templates is not part of it. However, if you want to add Military categories and templates to the profiles, feel free--just make sure to familiarize yourself with the guidelines first!
