History

The Clay Hall Plantation was a rice plantation[1] owned by Nathaniel Heyward Sr. who died in 1851. He was a planter of great wealth and owned 17 plantations at his death. Heyward was noted as being "the most successful rice planter of his time."[2] Clay Hall Plantation was located on the west side of the Combahee River in the Beaufort Dist, now Beaufort County, South Carolina.[3]
