What is Important or The Title

Hi Connectors! The February Connectors Challenge starts February 1st

Description of the challenge

This is a monthly challenge open to everyone. The goal is to connect unconnected branches to the Main Tree, either through the creation of new profiles,by connecting to existing profiles, creation of new profiles to make a connection to existing profiles or by completing merges.

MM: Help me here-does a merge count in the tracker? I don't think so?
SCP: It appears they can propose the merge and select that as an answer after hitting the tracker button. The text above said completing but the page says proposing. I recommend we just say merges. It is too vague but I think good enough.
MM: While sometimes it is creating new profiles, I dont know that I want to say just creating new profiles because it sounds like CaT.
SCP: That was my first thought.  :) I moved that part of the text to the middle. It might not make sense in the middle but I think it is an appropriate place for it to be understood especially by newbies

How to score

Scoring is based on the number of branches connected to the tree, not the number of individual profiles. So, whether a branch consists of two people or ninety-two people, it still counts as ONE connection.

[Unlike the Connect-a-Thon, only actual connections made are counted, not the number of profiles created to get to a connection.]Connectors Challenge page.

Connectors Challenge Step-by-Step images

MM: Use a link to SHOW this visually, I don't think users understand this piece. Not new users.
SCP: I added the Step-by-Step images link that another WT has already completed. I have the rough draft of a video complete to show this. I hope to have it completed by March 1st
DR: The sentence I placed in brackets seems redundant. - DR
SCP: ....I think the CaT does need addressed since our challenge has different rules. This is what is tripping a lot of newbies up. I moved it to its own line. Thoughts?

Moved up from below: Remember the tally is not of profiles created (like the Connect-a-Thon) but of actual connections made to the Global Family Tree. You might connect a whole branch of profiles and make 100 new profiles in the process of making a connection, but the connection only counts as 1.

Rules

The Connector’s Challenge Rules:

MM: No apostrophe? The Connectors Challenge Rules? Or because it's possession now it's The Connectors' Challenge Rules.

Rules Step 1

1. Select an existing profile (created before this month’s challenge began) that is not currently connected to the Global Family Tree. (Hint: If you are a member of the Connectors Project, you’ll see a yellow puzzle piece icon next to that person’s name at the top of their profile if they aren’t connected.)

MM: Pick an existing profile (created before this month’s challenge began) that is not currently connected to the Global Family Tree. (Hint: If you have the option turned on in WBE, you’ll see a yellow puzzle piece icon next to that person’s name at the top of their profile if they aren’t connected.)
SCP: YES!!! Much much better Melissa!! Puzzle man now in WBE. Let's not discuss it anymore

Rules Step 2

2. Add a profile for any first degree relative for that profile (a parent, spouse, child, or sibling). Continue adding first degree relatives until you run into a profile that is already connected to the Global Family Tree that you can attach to. Remember to use good sources to support the creation or connection of every profile you make! Please be aware that it takes 24 hours for the tree to update and show the connection.

DR: 2. Add any first degree relative to that profile (a parent, spouse, child, or sibling). Continue adding relatives until you reach a profile that is already connected to the Global Family Tree. Along the way, be sure to cite solid sources to support the creation and connection of every profile you make. Please be aware that may take up to 24 hours for the tree to update and show your connections.

Rules This One Makes Me Crazy

3. ANSWER this post to let us know you are participating this month. [This lets us know that you’re participating in this month’s challenge and let us know below whom you are working on.] (Use the Challenge Tracker to record your connections. Be sure to comment “Connected to Smith-000” when you make the connection to the already existing, already connected profile. Replace Smith-000 with the actual profile ID of the starting profile you were trying to connect).

DR:The section in brackets is not a rule and doesn't belong here - DR

The section in parenthesis makes no sense to me - DR

SCP: I agree and reworded the "answer this post" sentence

Rules Not really a rule

4. Remember the tally is not of profiles created (like the Connect-a-Thon) but of actual connections made to the Global Family Tree. You might connect a whole branch of profiles and make 100 new profiles in the process of making a connection, but the connection only counts as 1.

DR: This is not a rule and, again, it's redundant. Merge it with the "scoring" section above - DR

SCP: I agree. Ditch this entire #4? DR:Yes!

Rules also not a rule really

5. If you enjoy challenges, keep in mind that adding good sources to any existing profiles you run into while connecting or fixing errors on those existing profiles might count towards the Sourcerers or Data Doctors Challenges.

DR: I don't know that it is necessary to include this - DR
SCP: I agree - I vote to eliminate #5 entirely DR:Yes!

Step 6 - I like that

6. Here is the Tracker for February 2024.

MM: I just don't know that it's step 6 in the rule list.
DR: Not a rule
SCP: This is in the next section. I vote to eliminate #6 entirely DR:Yes!

I think we don't change this
