About the Project
The Holt Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Holt name; it’s origins. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Holt name, including "Holst” and "Holtz".
As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically, by time period, or by topic. These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other.

Origins
The lastname Holt is a place name, of Proto-Germanic (Denmark, south Sweden, southern Norway, Schleswig-Holstein and northern Lower Saxony) origin and means a small wood or grove of trees. It derives from the Old English word "holt" (near-synonym of wold) and the German word "Holz" (Wald).
You can divide the Holt lastname into two/three categories respectively: the English Holts, the German Holts and the Scandinavian Holt’s.
