This page represents the information I found while looking for a Mesby Cemetery supposedly in Norwood NC, of Stanly County.

This Mesby Cemetery came up when I was researching James Hezekiah Brock. I found information on him through Family Search and then when to look at the sources that were used for the information given.

I also found his Find a Grave (FG) profile but it was a memorial page without a cemetery listed.

At that point I looked at descendants as well as siblings to see if I could find where James was buried. He is mentioned in the Death certificate of his wife Pauline Brock. Her place of burial was listed as Mesby Cemetery.

This was confusing to me because I have never heard of anyone or anything named Mesby.

I worked in Norwood for 9 years and worked in Stanly for 15 and had never heard of Mesby Cemetary.

• My first thought is it could be attributed to the wrong place. I searched Mesby Cemetery in North Carolina, on the internet and no cemetery with that name. *Next I searched Mesby, in North Carolina to see if it was a city by that name. I found no city, township, community by that name.
• I noticed two things when I searched Mesby in North Carolina. First I found first names of people named Mesby but really no one had a last name of Mesby.

Cemeteries are not named after first names traditionally so I knew this was a dead end. The second thing I found was there were people that had the last name of Mosby, which is the other avenue I was going to use to tackle this mystery, a misspelled name.

• So at this point I researched Mosby in North Carolina. I found developments, roads, and people with the last name of Mosby.
• I continued in to the second and third page of my internet search and saw that a general Mosby marched from Virginia to Charlotte, North Carolina.
• I then looked up the route that Mosby’s men took to reach Charlotte and it passed almost straight through the middle of North Carolina.

I searched to find more information on Mosby’s men. I found that this was an off shoot of the Army of Virginia and his group was commissioned by Robert E. “In January 1863, J.E.B. Stuart, with the approval of General Robert E.
