Slaves Received From Father

In a 4 February 1820 deed from his father Nicholas Zieigler, Lewis Zeigler was gifted the following:

"State of South Carolina. Know all men by these presents that I Nicholas Zeigler in consideration of the natural love and affection which I entertain towards my Son Lewis Zeigler and also for divers good causes me there unto moving have given granted and confirmed and by these presents do give grant and confirm unto my Said Son Lewis Zeigler the following negro Slaves, to wit Sam, Steven, Thersby, Lula, Peter, and Moses Six in number to have and to hold the Said negro Slaves unto the Said Lewis Zeigler his heirs and assigns forever from and after the day on which my Said Son Shall attain the age of twenty one Years or from and after and after the day on which I think Proper make a former delivery of the Said negro Slaves to my Sincer Son before he attains the age of twenty one years or from and after the day of my death if I should die before my Said Son attains the age of twenty one years Therby reserving to my self the use and ownership of the Said negro Slaves until my Said Son Shall attain the age of twenty one years or untill I Shall or may make a formal deliverancey of the Said negro Slaves to my Said Son before he attains the age of twenty one years.
In witness wharof I have hearunto Set my hand and Seal this fourth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty
