Stavsjö Inn lies in the small village of Stavsjö that grew up around the ironworks, Stafsjö Bruk, that was established in 1666. The inn was originally a canteen for the ironworks as well as an inn. Back then it stood closer to the ironworks but was moved to its current location at the end of the 19th century. It then served as living quarters and there was a store on the bottom floor.

In 1947 it once again became an inn under the current owner, counseler Julius Lindström.[1] The inn became a popular place for travellers to stop and have a bite to eat since the highway Riksväg 1 (Riksettan) went through Stavsjö. The road's name was changed to E4 and as traffic became heavier and heavier the road was moved in many places so that it did not go through any towns. This is what happend to Stavsjö in the late 1980's and the inn started to have troubles financially.[2] The place changed owners several times in the early 2000's and there were debates over who the real owner was at one time. One company just closed it down from one day to the next, giving the staff no notice, just a last pay check. In 2009 the inn opened up again, this time a Chinese man had bought it and during two summer it stayed opened. Then he went home to China with his family and never came back. In February of 2014 another company had bought the building and renovated it in hope that they would get a contract with the Swedish Migration Board to house people seeking asylum[3].
