Tres Mesquites Ranch

Space Page written by Allan Harl Thomas

The following photographs are from the collection of Fred and Merry Thomas and offer a glimpse of ranch life in the mid-1930s in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The first set are from a roundup on Fred's sister in law's, Maria del Rosario Garcia Thomas, ranch, Don Francisco Yturria.

The ranch, The Tres Mesquites - Thomas Ranch was established in 1861 as the Tres Mesquites division of Francisco Yturria's land holdings in Kenedy County and Willacy County.

Don Francisco Yturria (1830–1912) married Felicitas Treviño, daughter of Ygnacio Treviño, an original Spanish land grantee in Cameron County. Ygnacio Treviño was the grantee of San Martin Grant in Cameron County.

At the time of his death Yturria in 1912 owned 130,000 acres in Cameron County, Hidalgo County, Willacy County, Kenedy County, and Starr County .

Tres Mesquites Ranch was part of the San Juan de Carricitos Spanish land grant issued in 1790 to Jose Narciso Caravos (aka Cabazos)[1]

San Juan De Carricitos Land Grant

The largest land grant in South Texas, the San Juan de Carricitos lands were awarded to Don Jose Narciso Cavazos in 1792 by the King of Spain. Comprising over one-half million acres, the grant included virtually all of present Willacy County, including the sites of the towns of Sebastian, Lyford, Raymondville, Lasara, San Perlita, and Port Mansfield. In 1793 Cavazos took formal possession of the land grant seven miles north of this site. Most of the grant was later sold by Cavazos' heirs, although some descendants still live within its boundaries. (1988)

Tres Mesquites - Thomas Ranch Brand

The ranch had passed through Don Francisco's daughter Isabel Yturria Garcia, to her daughter Maria del Rosario Garcia Thomas at the time these photographs were taken. Harl and Maria Thomas began Thomas Charolais in 1936 with the importation of the Charolais breed of cattle from France via Canada to South Texas.
