This page is to be used only by US Black Heritage Project members who have been certified to work on project managed profiles. If you haven't been certified yet and wish to do so, please contact a Heritage Exchange leader.

The USBH Heritage Exchange instruction pages address how to process slavery information on WikiTree profiles. This page specifically addresses how to process that same information on Project Managed Profiles–profiles managed by one or more WikiTree projects. The rules are slightly different.

Note: It is important that you follow these instructions exactly due to the agreement USBH has made with other projects to add only this information to profiles. If you feel you need to deviate from these instructions, please contact a Heritage Exchange leader. Please attempt to make as few edits as possible when adding the information since each edit will appear in that project's edits feed.

Before making any edits to a project managed profile, you will need to do all the work first. This means researching the family as needed and finding slavery sources, plus creating the "Slaves of" space page, plantation page, and/or any other slavery pages as appropriate.

Although the majority of project managed profiles needing slavery history edits will be slave owners, some enslaved ancestors might also be managed by other projects.

Normally, before making changes to a project managed profile, it is standard to send a message to the project to discuss your proposed changes. However, you may add the following slavery information to any project managed profile without sending any message:

  1. Slave/slave owner category by location
    • Do not add the top level USBH Heritage Exchange Category. Any additional heritage exchange categories should be placed on the linked space page(s).
  2. === Slaves === heading above the sources heading on slave owner profiles. If there is a Research Notes heading, put the Slaves heading above that as well.
  3. Links to the "Slaves of" page, plantation page, and any other slavery pages for that person, below the Slaves heading.
    • Nothing else should be beneath the Slaves heading except links to pages. Do not list names of slaves below the heading. Everything should instead go on one of the linked pages.
  4. Sources proving the slavery history in the sources section. If there are more than a few sources, please put the bulk of them on the "Slaves of" page.

In the "explain your changes" box, please write "Added slavery information per USBH managed profile standards."
