In the early 1970s, my grandmother Velvia Owens bought a spiral ring notebook and started writing about her ancestors. She included as many photos as she could and in addition to births, marriages, and deaths, she wrote stories she had heard from her parents or witnessed herself. Unfortunately, when she died the original notebook was claimed by her oldest son who refused to share it with the rest of the family for many years. Eventually, he allowed one of his brothers to make a digital copy and send it to the rest of us.

I spent many hours looking at this notebook as a child. She wrote it in her Ozark voice and vocabulary so I can hear her reading it to me as I follow along. It is a treasured gift.

However, it is not a perfect gift. She was mainly depending on memory. She seems to have done an okay job with names but some of the dates are not...quite...right. Everything needs to be verified.

What an absolute family treasure! I have many, many wonderful memories of looking through family pictures with my Nana looking through her old black leatherette family scrapbook too. It's been so hard to track it down and find out who has it after she passed away as I lived out-of-state when she died but I can still see the pictures in my mind and hear her stories. She was the oldest and pretty accurate! I think my attempts of recreating those wonderful memories with her is why I keep doing genealogy.
