Matthew Spears is a part of US Black heritage.

Matthew was born about 1834, a slave of John Reed, originally of Bourbon County, Kentucky, who removed to Clinton, Missouri some time before 1850. Matthew enlisted in the Union Army at Carrollton, Placer, California on 8 February 1864.
