Biography

Son of William and Catherine Spencer. He was born in Maryland.

Married Mary Shippen McIlvaine, born in Philadelphia the daughter of Alexander Murray and Mary McIlvaine. Mary and Charles were married 3 November 1880 in Philadelphia, PA at the Church of the Savior (Episcopal Church). After Charles' death, Mary married Harold Goodwin.

They had four children:

• Katharine Murray Spencer
• Mary Rodman Spencer, died in infancy.
• Julia Spencer
• Elizabeth Rodman Spencer.

Charles died of typhoid fever in 1887. He died in Centreville, MD. However, April 29, 1900, there was a transit permit issued to bring his body from Queen Anne's County to Philadelphia, PA. He was buried in Philadelphia 1 May 1900.
