Biography

John was born in 1882. He was the son of James Spittal and Jane Constable. John was born in 1882 in Markinch, Fife. [1]

In 1891 the family live in School Brae, Markinch. In the house are James Spittal (30) Journeyman Tailor born Markinch, Jane (30) born Freuchie, John (8), Grace I (6), and Christina (10 months). All three children were born in Markinch. [2]

In 1901 the family live at 21 School Street, Markinch. In the house are James (40) Tailor, Jane (40) born Falkland, John (18) Cabinet maker, Christina (10), George (8), James (4) and Kate (1). All the children were born in Markinch. [3]

By 1911 the family had moved to 25 Victoria Terrace, Dunfermline. In the house are James (50) Tailor (Master) working on his own account at home, born Markinch, Jane (50) born Freuchie, John (28) Cabinetmaker, Grace (26) weaver linen factory, Christina (20) machinist linen factory, George (18) mechanic linen factory, James (14) and Kate (11) and Lizzie (9). All the children were born in Markinch. [4]

In 1915 John signed up for Short Service for the Duration of the War with the Royal Engineers. His service record shows that his address was 25 Victoria Terrace, Dunfermline and his father was James Spittal. At the time of joining John was 33 years and 3 months old, his trade was as a Cabinetmaker. He was unmarried. His height was recorded as 5'7.5", chest measurement 36.5". He was attested on 9 Decemner 1915 and posted on 4 December 1916[5]

In 1921 the family still live at 25 Victoria Terrace, Dunfermline. In the house are James Spittal (60), Tailor born Markinch, Jane Constable (60) born Freuchie, John Spittal (38) Cabinet Maker born Markinch, George (28) Engineer born Markinch and Lizzie (19) Tailoress born Markinch. [6]




He passed away in 1969.
