Biography

(James) Caleb Squibb was born July 29, 1861 in Bois D’Arc, Greene County, Missouri, the son of James Caleb and Squibb Elizabeth Ann Wallis. Caleb stayed on the family farm until he was nineteen. He attended common schools in Springfield and then Marionville Community Institute. It was there he met his future wife, Nora Massey; they married November 19, 1884. Mary Lenora “Nora” Massey was born July 10, 1866, the daughter of Nathaniel and Mary Catherine Massey. When Caleb was twenty-two, he attended business college and pharmacy school in St. Louis. After passing the board, he operated a drug store in Bois D’Arc. Later he moved to Springfield and owned a drug store there until 1913. In semi-retirement, Caleb looked after his successful real estate business and investments. He and Nora had a lovely home on N. Jefferson St. where they raised their 10 children. At the time of their deaths they resided on East Monroe. Caleb was a Democrat, attended St. Paul’s Methodist Church, and was a member of several organizations, including the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Caleb died of a heart attack March 5,1940 and Nora died forty-eight hours later; they are both buried at Hazlewood Cemetery in Springfield.
