Biography

Estimated year of birth: 1760. According to the 1810 federal census, the oldest man in Robert's household was born before 1765.[1] In the 1830 census Robert's widow was shown as born in the 1760's. In the 1840 census her birth decade was the 1750's.[2][3] Place of birth was Virginia or North Carolina.

Land purchase and taxation: A Robert Stanfield was taxed in 1784 for 350 acres and one "white poll". The land was near Hico or Hyco in Caswell County, North Carolina.[4] In 1785 Robert Stanfield purchased 330 acres in Caswell County for 180 pounds. It was on the Double Creeks of South Hico. During the next year Robert sold 33 acres of that land to Charles Fooshe.[5]

Comment: I am not certain that the Robert Stanfield in the above 1780's land records is the same man as shown in later records. I have not found a Robert Stanfield of Caswell or Person County in the federal censuses of 1790 or 1800. Samples-1044 18:36, 5 February 2022 (UTC)

1803: A Robert Stanfield Jr. was serving as the administrator of the estate of James Stanfield in Person County. Stanfields named Jonathan, John, Thomas, Ephraim, Ephraim Jr. and William paid money to and received money from James' estate.[6] Person County had been created from Caswell County in 1792.

1810: Robert's household was recorded in Person County. There was one man and woman over 45. There were six children or young people, three male and three female. Other Stanfield households were headed by "Duret" and "Hal.", both 26-44, and John, age 16-26.[1] Comment: This census record was alphabetized.

1820: The Stanfield household remained in Person County. There was a couple over 45 years old, a young man 16-25, and a girl 10-15. Four slaves were counted. On the same census page was a John W. Stanfield, 26-44. Elsewhere in Person County were Durrett and Harrison Stanfield, both over 45 years old.[7]

Death: Robert Stanfield died in Person County sometime between 14 April 1826, the date of his will, and June 1826, when his will was proved in court.[8]

Wife and children in will: Robert's will may have named his wife as "Averela." Later census records and transcriptions spelled her name as Overilla, Orvilla, or Averilla. The children named were Robert, Duke, John, Jerrymiah, Thomas, Edmon, and Frances. Son John and friend Stephen Pleasant were the executors.[8][2][3]

Inventory of estate: Robert's estate included debts from, or possibly debts to, two men with first names matching his children in the will. There was one "note on Robert G. Stanfield" for $100 due 15 March 1816, subject to a credit of $42 dated 8 Feb 1818. There was also a "note on John W. Stanfield" for $62.65 due 29 March 1821. The inventory also included six slaves. There were 4 horses, 14 cattle, 27 hogs, and 18 sheep.[9]
