Henry (Harry) M. Stares (1881-1956): Machinist & Electrician with DOSCO. He was born in Brooklyn, Bonavista Bay, March 14, 1881 to Emma and Francis Stares, and grew up in Port Blandford. He first worked with the Newfoundland Railway before moving to Bell Island in 1900 to work with the Scotia [Iron Ore] Company in the Mechanical Department at Scotia Pier. He married Amelia Normore of Bell Island in 1904. They had 4 children, a daughter and 3 sons. In 1908, he joined the Dominion [Iron Ore] Company, where he remained until 1922, working first in the Mechanical Department, then in the Electrical Department. In 1922, during a period when Wabana was experiencing layoffs following the takeover of the mining operation by BESCO, he moved to Massachusetts, USA, where he spent the next 8 years working in construction, including work on the first Statler Hotel in Boston. He returned to Bell Island in 1930 and began working in DOSCO's Construction Department, where he remained until his retirement in 1954 at age 73. He died May 15, 1956 at the Grace Hospital in St. John's and is buried in the Anglican Cemetery, Bell Island. Source: The Daily News, May 23, 1956, p. 13, and 1921 Census.
