Jean was born in Mietesheim, Bas-Rhin, Alsace in France on 31 December 1815 to Jean Staub, a weaver, and his wife Catherine Schweyer. Jean was 25 at the time. The godparents were Jean Claus, aged 27, and Philippe Froelich, aged 33.[1]

"Died. - Mrs Elizabeth Staub, relict of the late John Staub, died of apoplexy on Sunday, December 3, at the home o her daughter, Mrs. John Seitz, near Millgrove, in the town of Alden, aged 85 years. Mrs. Staub was a former resident of this village, and lived for many years in the house on Central Avenue now owned and occupied by Mr. George Biddlecomb. She is survived by two sons, Mr. John Staub of Akron and Mr. George Staub of Wilhelm, and four daughters, Mrs. Leonhard Schurr of Clarence, Mrs. John Seitz of Wende Station, Mrs Elizabeth Walter of Buffalo and Mrs. Mary Joslyn of La Salle. The funeral was held at the North Lancaster Disciple Church Wednesday morning. Rev. R. C. Lutton officiating."
