Biography

Carel Gert was born in 1815 at Kareehoutrivier, Calvinia, Cape Colony; he was the son of Carel Gerrit Steenkamp and Johanna Levina (Steenkamp) Steenkamp.

He was about 20 years old when he married widow Susanna Jacoba Agdalena van Schalkwyk, aged 40, in the Cape Colony around 1835 (first child born 1836). Children born of this marriage were:

After Susanna died in 1861 he married again. He was 47 years old when he married 22 year old Hendrina Jacoba Steenkamp in Calvinia on 23 June 1862.^[1]

Carel was 67 years old when he passed away in his home at Drakkerivier, Calvinia, on 22 June 1882. Jacoba had passed away on 13 June 1882; he was thus twice a widower when he died.^[2][3]
