After Susanna died in 1861 he married again. He was 47 years old when he married 22 year old Hendrina Jacoba Steenkamp in Calvinia on 23 June 1862.[1]

Carel was 67 years old when he passed away in his home at Drakkerivier, Calvinia, on 22 June 1882. Jacoba had passed away on 13 June 1882; he was thus twice a widower when he died.[2][3]
