Michael was baptised on 26 December 1706 at Keighley, Yorkshire, the son of Michael Stell.[1][2]
Michael's father died in 1724 and left him a farm at Hey, Keighley, and a share in the family farm, Wellhead, his brother Joseph having the other share. However, Michael and Joseph were not to inherit until the age of 24, and were put under the guardianship of their brother in law John Bolton until then.[3]
Michael, the eldest son, also inherited the lordship of the manor of Oakworth from his father.[4] This included game rights and in 1725 he applied at the Quarter Sessions to register an authorisation to kill game. The application was by "Warrant under the hands and seals of Michaell Stell and John Bolton Gents, Lords of the Mannor of Oakworth". The application was for authorisation for "Michaell Stell of Haworth, gent, to take and kill game within the Mannor of Oakworth". Michael was still only 19 so John Bolton was probably acting in his capacity as guardian rather than holding lordship of the manor on his own account. [5]
Michael married about 1725/1726 and a son Michael was baptised on 5 December 1727 at Keighley "Michael son of Michael Stell of Wel-head yeoman".[6]
In 1733 Michael bought his brother Joseph's farm at Stairs in Oxenhope, and also bought out his brother Joseph's interest in the Wellhead farm.[7]. About this time he sold the Lordship of the manor of Oakworth to the Ferrands, perhaps to help raise money for buying the farms.[8]
Michael married before 5 December 1727, when the baptism of "Michael son of Michael Stell of Wel-head yeoman" is recorded. It is unlikely that he was married at the the time of his father's will February 1724 as he was barely 17 and was put under guardianship. There is a marriage of Michael Stell and Joanna Brook of Haworth at Bradford on 30 August 1726, but he is described as a labourer, which seems unlikely. This Joanna was buried at Haworth on 7 January 1739, Joney Stell of Haworth.[9] There are children of Michael Stell of Haworth in the 1720s, and the game licence is for Michael Stell of Haworth, gent, but this may be a separate person as the baptism of Michael junior in 1727 is "of Wel-head" which is Keighley parish. There are several Michael Stells who need to be disentangled.
