Biography

Karel was born in 1885. He was the son of Václav Stepanek and Anna Poborska.

Karel ("Carl") emigrated to the United States when he was six months old, accompanying his father Václav Stepanek. The ship Donau's manifest was dated 17 Oct 1885.[1]

According to his WWI Draft Registration, he was a short man, about 5' 5 1/2" tall, with blue eyes and dark hair.

At age 15, Charles was attending college and living at home.[2] After College he worked at a woodworking factory.[3]

He married Rose Chaloupka. They had two children:

  1. Helen Josephine Stepanek
  2. Charles Comenius Stepanek

In the 1930 census Charlie (age 45) was the married head of household in Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States. He was the manager of his woodworking factory at that time.[4]

He died in New York in October 1964.

Notes

Charles gave his son the middle name of "Comenius," probably after John Comenius (1592-1670. This suggesting Charles had a love for learning and history, also possibly a sympathy for the Moravian Brethren. [5]

May not be the son of Anna Poborska Stepanek. Karel and his father appear on the ship's manifest alone, without Anna. Possibly Karel was from a first marriage? There is evidence that Anna Poborska emigrated as a single woman.
