Biography

William's birth was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1868 in the Knighton district.^[1]

In the 1881 England and Wales census William (age 13) was a servant of Evan Watson in Llanbister, Radnorshire, Wales.^[2]

In the 1891 England and Wales census William (age 23) was a servant of David Davies in Llanbister, Radnorshire, Wales.^[3]

He married Jane Price in 1893.^[4]

In the 1901 England and Wales census William (age 33) was the married head of household in Llanbadarn-fynydd, Radnorshire, Wales.^[5]

In the 1911 England and Wales census William (age 43) was the married head of household in Llanbadarn-fynydd, Radnorshire, Wales.^[6]

In the 1921 census, William, age 54, Roadman, was recorded as the married head of household in Rock Shap Llanbadarn Fynydd, Penybont Station, Llanbadarn Fynydd, Radnorshire, Wales.^[7]

William's death was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1922 in the Knighton district.^[8]

Research Notes

There were two William Stephens in the same area around the same time, which has caused confusion among most online family trees. There was William born in 1868 in Llandewy (mother's maiden name Morgan) and Willie Hamer born in 1870 around Bleddfa (mother's maiden name Hamer), who married either Martha Rees or Lucinda Hargest in 1904.

Based on a certified copy of William's 1868 birth registration, he was born at Lower Reeses, Llandewy, the son of Thomas and Sarah. According to the 1871 census, Thomas & Sarah lived at Reeses, Lower, Llandewy Ystradenny.* "1871 England, Wales & Scotland Census".
