Biography

Helen Marguerite Stephens, daughter of Andrew Johnson and Flora Belle (Gregg) Stephens, was born in Greene County, Pennsylvania, in 1899. Her obituary stated her birthdate was November 25, but it is recorded as November 2 on her death certificate. Her gravestone gives only the year. Her father was the informant for the death certificate. ^[1]

She was listed as "Helem M Stevens"", age 7 months in the 1900 census of Cumberland Township. Her brother L G was 4. Her father A.J. was 36, a farmer, and Flora was 28. ^[2]

Trouble with names followed the family ten years later. "Hellen Stepheson" was 10, residing with Johnson Stepheson, 45, his wife Flora B., 38, and her brother L O, age 14. They were farming in Cumberland Township. ^[3]

According to the Bailey family, on June 6, 1919, she married Alva Inghram Bailey, son of William Rea and Frances (Inghram) Bailey of Carmichaels, Cumberland Township. No documentation of the marriage date has been found.

They were recorded as a married couple living on Vine Street in Carmichaels in the 1920 census. "Elva" was 22 and Helen 20. His occupation was listed illegibly. ^[4]

In the next decade the family had grown with the addition of four children: Alva Stephens (1920-1998), Thomas Johnson (1923-1928), Edward Eugene (1925-1983), and Flora Frances (1928-1981). The 1930 census listed most of the family in the same house in Carmichaels but circumstances had changed. Thomas had died, and his father was absent.

"B. Helen Bailey" was the head of the household on Vine Street. She was listed as married at age 19. The house was valued at $7,500. Helen was 30 with no occupation listed. Alva S. was 9, Edward was 5, and Flora was one year old. ^[5]

There is no discovered record of the divorce, but Alva Inghram Bailey ["A.J." in the transcription] was listed as "son-in-law" in the home of Mabel Jackson in Bedford County, Pennsylvania in the same census. ^[6] It is believed, but not documented, that he was not married to anyone other than Helen at that time.

In 1940 "Helen Barley" was living with her parents [name given as Stephen in the transcription] in their home on Greene Street in Carmichaels. She was recorded as 40, divorced, with two years of college and working as a practical nurse. Alva S., 19, Edward, 15, and Flora, age 11, were also listed in the household. ^[7]

Helen died on May 16, 1945. ^[8]. She is buried with her parents at Muddy Creek Cemetery, Khedive, Greene County. ^[9]
