Biography

Samuel Stephenson III was born about 1806. He is a proposed possible son of Samuel Stephenson and Catharine Aller.

There are a couple of hints that indicate that Samuel Stephenson II may have had a son that predeceased him who had no heirs. Therefore, he was not named in the will of Samuel Stephenson dated 1843.

The first hint is a marriage to Miss Margaret Wallace in a Presbyterian church at Muskingum County, Ohio.[1] This marriage record contained a statement of the bride's father, indicating that she was aged under 18 on January 13, 1837. The father of the bride, Robert Wallace, was also the minister who performed the ceremony.

Marriage Record

The second clue for Samuel Stephenson Junior is that a man named Samuel Stephenson Junior registered a land claim in Mercer County, Ohio beside his brothers Hiram, Silas, Philip and John Stephenson on January 19, 1837. This would have been just 6 days after the Muskingum County, Ohio marriage. Entirely possible, though. The distance is roughly 140 miles. Traveling at 24 miles per day, the family could have made the journey from Zanesville, Ohio to the Lima, Ohio Land Office in 6 days.

Called Sam Stevenson Junior in Land Record

There was no mention of Samuel Stephenson in the will of Samuel Stephenson nor provisions made for any widow or children in that will. Samuel Stephenson did make provisions for his wife Catharine and also his grandchildren Elizabeth and John Tilton, whose mother predeceased Samuel Stephenson.

He passed away about 1839.
