Biography

Johann Jost was born before his christening date of 13 Jan 1751. He was the son of Adam Sternberg and Elizabeth Rickardt. [1] He passed away in 1835.

He is said to have married Eunice (Unknown) with whom he had at least one child, Elizabeth, b. 1799. [2]

Notes

The 1790 Census for Mohawk, Montgomery, New York, lists a Joseph Starenburg, Jr. as head of household along with one male less than 16 years old, and three females. Note that Johan Jost's brother Jacob had a son name Jost born in 1772. It is unclear which Joseph is represented here.

US Census records for New York State for 1810 (Charlestown and Canajoharie) and 1830 (Brookfield and Lockport) show two Joseph Sternbergs each year without giving specific ages, each with several children in the household.

The 1830 Census for Lockport is in Niagara County and it includes two men aged 20-30, and a male aged between 80 and 90, which would appear to match the Joseph Sternberg buried in Hillside Cemetery in that county. (Also enumerated are two adult women, one in her 30s and one in her 50s, along with three children under ten.) On the next line is an Ephraim L. Sternburgh, possibly a son or grandson of Johann Jost. [3]

The 1840 Census for Lockport lists a Joseph Sternberg between 30 and 40 years old with no one older than 40 in the household. There is also a Eunice Sternberg in her 60s listed as head of household in 1840 in Lockport, along with a woman in her 40s and four teenagers.[4]

Notes

Find-a-Grave has no listing for a Eunice Sternberg in the right age range.

The Find-a-Grave link for Joseph (below) indicates a later birth year (1754) than is found in the baptismal record (1751.) The reason for the discrepancy is unclear. It's possible that one Joseph died young and a second Joseph was born in 1754. Or perhaps the family misremembered his age when the stone was made, or that it was mistranscribed.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
