Biography

Edward Stevens, son of John Stevens and Mary Mumford, was born about 1662 in Abingdon Parish, Gloucester Co., Virginia; he was buried January 24, 1734/35 at Abingdon Parish, Gloucester,Virginia. Edward married Martha Elizabeth Lane before 1684 in Cloucester Co., Virginia. They had a child James Edward Stevens.

In 1720, the eastern end of St. Mary's Parish in Essex Co became Caroline Co. Edward Inherited land in Caroline Co, VA. According to the 1704 Quit Rolls, he owned 80 acres.

11/4/1717 Deed to "my loving brother James Stevens of St. Mary's Essex Co

Indenture 14 March 1718

In 1718, he sold land to Robert Thomas and gave 118 acres to his son James Stevens: Between Edward Stevens of Glosto Co of the one part and Robert Thomas of Essex Co of the other part . . . sum of 30 pounds sterling money . . . 55 acres . . . in St. Mary's Parish in Essex Co . . . that is to say, that all the land and property . . . to begin at the lower side of white wash with its breadth to contain ye same, ye remainder for ye said Robert Thomas . . . 118 acres of land which I give to my son, James Stevens, if said James . . . yielding and paying thereof the rent of one ear of Indian corn at ye feast of St. Michael's ye Arch Angel only if the same be lawfully demanded . . . .[signed]Edward Stevens [witnesses] Henry Stevens, Edward Stevens, Jr, John Daniel

Edward Stevens acknowledged his deed of lease and release of land to James Stevens, Elizabeth, the wife of the said Edward, freely relinquished her right of dower thereto, and the said Edward also acknowledged his bond for performance of covenant to the said James which are admitted to record.
